Founded in 1999, 'Popcorn Taxi' is a regular in-depth film event where filmmakers and enthusiasts can meet, watch films of all types, and discuss the filmmaking process in a candid, interactive and inclusive atmosphere.
What makes Popcorn Taxi unique is the focus on the filmmakers' craft and career rather than the usually shallow run-of-the-mill fare. The moderator/interviewers aim to explore why the filmmakers make the choices they do, and get a better insight into the people themselves and how they brought their visions to the screen. The guests range from Producers, Directors, Actors, Writers, Editors, Cinematographers, Artists, Visual Effects Supervisors, Designers and Composers – all facets that go to create the medium of cinema in all its many guises.
For over a decade, we've hosted more than 500 events in Sydney and Melbourne. Our guests have included Quentin Tarantino, Ang Lee, Rob Zombie, Jerry Lewis, Kevin Smith, George Miller, Dennis Hopper, Baz Luhrmann, Gillian Armstrong, Wim Wenders, Werner Herzog, Tim Robbins, Danny Boyle, Errol Morris, Phillip Noyce, Roger Corman, Richard Linklater, Philip Glass, Ewan McGreggor and countless others.
At the 2000 AFI Awards, Popcorn Taxi was awarded the prestigious 'Byron Kennedy Award' for excellence and innovation in the Australian film industry. More recently we were awarded the Inside Film Award for 'Film Festival Of The Year'. Popcorn Taxi is the only organisation to have won both awards.
