John Ford to Spielberg: “Get the F#@k Outta Here!”

Avedon, John Ford, réalisateur, Bel Air, Californie, 11 avril 1972

Three weeks out from the US release of Jon Favreau’s sci-fi/western Cowboys & Aliens, the Iron Man director has released a series of teaser interviews on YouTube with key cast and crew. Last week saw a seven-part discussion with Harrison Ford, covering territory that included on-set tales of The Empire Strikes Back (The origin of “I love you – I know” for example) to Raiders‘ wardrobe comparisons with his C&A character.

Today, the channel has released five more but this time with Favreau chatting to executive producer Steven Spielberg and producers Brian Grazer and Ron Howard. Covering such ground as Spielbergs’ initial intentions to direct, Howards’ experiences on a period piece (remember Far and Away?) and, rather bizarrely – Grazer’s history as a squatter on the Warner Bros. lot.

In the final video, Spielberg reminisces of his chance meeting with his hero, director John Ford. Ford went on to question the young ‘picture-maker’ to-be on his ability to distinguish art, the results did not stack in Spielberg’s favour. Such a meeting, although minute in the lunch-hour of Ford’s working day actually spelled a pivotal moment in cinematic history as the man who would later famously recreate the D-day, Omaha beach landing (winning an Oscar for his efforts) came face-to-face with the four-time Oscar winning, eye-patch-wearing handkerchief chewer who actually landed there.
