Coppola’s new ‘Twixt’ on cinema…

Coppola again leads the charge into the unknown…
The man who defied producer Robert Evans’ opinion that ‘the film is too dark!’ (The Godfather) then decided to make a sequel that again won the Oscar for Best Picture; dove headlong into a nightmare of coordination, bad luck, cunning and risk-taking beyond the pale that was Apocalypse Now – is back, and he’s again trying to re-invent the medium of cinema to audiences.

Speaking this week at Comic Con in San Diego, Coppola held court with star Val Kilmer and musician Dan Deacon to explain his latest feature with a difference, Twixt. A tale of a hack horror writer (Kilmer) who gets led around a small town by the ghost of Edgar Allen Poe (Ben Chaplin), and stumbles upon a local mystery involving a dead girl (Elle Fanning) and the local sheriff played by Bruce Dern.

The idea here is that the film is edited on-the-fly dependent on audience reaction. Akin to a Choose Your Own Adventure novel, scenes will unfold at different lengths depending on the choices made. Tom Waits will provide a narration that will appear on the ‘final cut’. Coppola will personally attend a 30-city live tour and be manning the equipment in order to toggle the scenes creating a fresh ‘cut’ every time.

“I was taken aback when studios said the were going to make 3D films all the time as if it was the magic fix… no. Cinema has so many tricks up its sleeve.” Coppola explained. His love of 3D goes back to the ‘50s, yet he also believes that it needn’t be experienced through the entire film, hence only parts of Twixt will be screened in 3D. Expect a Gothic, trippy and odd excursion into vampires with an emphasis on spooky horror rather than cheap thrills… more will unfold in the coming months as Twixt heads towards a 2012 release.
