Set in 1980’s Connecticut, ACCIDENTS HAPPEN is a wickedly funny and surprisingly moving story about family, fate and misfortune in American suburbia. Since he was a young child, Billy Conway has inexplicably been witness to terrible accidents. When one claims the life of his sister and leaves his brother severely brain-damaged, the weight of holding the family together falls on Billy’s shoulders.
Dad has moved out, leaving Billy with his difficult brother and bitter mother. Always the good boy, now 15 Billy begins to stray when he becomes friends with the neighbourhood troublemaker, but his unexpected bad behaviour may lead his family to move on from the past.
Yes, ACCIDENTS HAPPEN. They happen all the time, especially to the Conways.
Director, Andrew Lancaster infuses a magical atmosphere into his debut feature with a vivid visual style and striking production design that coat the story with an ethereal quality. Academy Award® winner Geena Davis is brilliant as Billy’s mother, delivering a performance full of nuance while at the same time vitalizing the biting humour laced in screenwriter Brian Carbee’s script. And bright newcomer Harrison Gilbertson portrays Billy perfectly as an adolescent caught in the collision of guilt, family responsibility, and self-discovery.
They are supported by a talented ensemble cast including Joel Tobeck, Harry Cook, Sebastian Gregory, Erik Thomson and Sarah Woods
Lancaster is recipient of numerous awards for his shorts (In Search of Mike, Palace Cafe). Brian Carbee’s screenplay is inspired by his mother’s unique way of expressing herself and the world he experienced growing up in Connecticut.
Lancaster is joined by multi-award winning producer Anthony Anderson (Somersault) and executive producer Heather Ogilvie (Hey Hey It’s Esther Blueburger, The Blackwater Lightship). The production team includes Emmy-nominated director of photography Ben Nott, ACS, recipient of the 2008 Excellence Award from the American Cinematographer’s Society. Production design is by Elizabeth Mary Moore, costume design by Academy Award® Winner Ruth Myers and Nina Edwards, editing by Roland Gallois, with an original score by Antony Partos and musical collaboration from Luke Steele and Empire of The Sun.
